Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II
Rev. Barber was born August 30, 1963, Indianapolis, Indiana. He grew up in Plymouth, North Carolina, and is the son of the late Rev. Dr. William J. Barber Sr. and Eleanor Patterson Barber.
Pastor Barber is a man after God's own heart. He has a heart for the community and all children. He is God's visionary for Greenleaf Christian Church, Disciples of Christ, located in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Serving as pastor since 1993, his consistent obedience to God has taken the Greenleaf congregation from glory to glory. During these years, Pastor Barber's uncompromising and bold teaching of God's Word has changed the lives of people both at Greenleaf and around the country.
To accommodate the tremendous growth of church ministries, several building expansion plans have been realized under the direction of Pastor Barber. The church built a new educational annex and added many ministries, which addressed the educational, evangelistic, and youth ministry needs of the congregation.
With these accomplishments and many other community-empowering projects, Pastor Barber continues to equip people in economics, leadership and business.
Educationally, Pastor Barber earned a bachelor's degree in Public Administration graduating Cum Laude from North Carolina Central University where he was a Dean Scholar and Benjamin Mays Fellow. He also earned a Master's of Divinity degree from Duke University and a doctorate degree from Drew University.
Pastor Barber has achieved many triumphs on both the local and national levels. He is the Chairman of Rebuilding Broken Places Community Development Corporation and Greenleaf Grace Village. He serves as Chairman of Anonymous We for Education and is a Faith-Based Consultant for NC Association of Community Development Corporations, and serves on the Racial Reconciliation Task Force.
Pastor Barber served as the Pastor of Fayette Street Christian Church (DOC), in Martinsville VA, the Executive Director for Campus Ministry; North Carolina Central University, in charge of the Black Church Ministry at Duke University and the Chaplain Intern at Guess Road Prison and an Associate Minister at Russell Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church.
Pastor Barber has served as Executive Director for NC Human Relations Commission Appointed by Governor James B. Hurt Jr. to serve on Hate Violence Church Bombing Task Force, he served as an Adjunct Professor of Religion and Ethics at Wesleyan College, and a member of National Reconciliation Task Force Christian Church Convocation, Regional Board of Christian Church (DOC), North Carolina Councils of Churches, He is spearheading efforts to develop Blue Ribbon Commission to address Wayne County Educational and Economic Development
Rev. Barber has preached, and lectured all over the country. He has lectured at the National Convocation Harambi Institute, the National Convocation of Christian Churches, and National Black Ministers Retreat and was the guest preacher for MLK Jr. Lecture Series at Duke University.
Pastor Barber and his wife Rebecca are the proud parents of five children: Sharrelle Monique, William Joseph, Rebekah Eleanor, Benjamin Joe, and Andrew Willard. The couple has also served as surrogate parents for many other children in the church and community.
