Greenleaf Grace Village
In 1996 at a black minister retreat that Pastor Barber met Dr. Norma Ellington-Twitty, Vice-President of Program, Planning, and Evaluation for the National Benevolent Association, that he shared the church?s vision to provide affordable housing for low-income seniors.
As a result, Greenleaf Christian Church and Rebuilding Broken Places CDC in collaboration with The National Benevolent Association of the Christian Church, (DOC) an organization from St. Louis, Missouri, received a 3.7 million dollar, 202 Senior Housing Grant from the Department of HUD.
After completing an assessment of the community and receiving the approval of the congregation, Rev. Barber on behalf of Greenleaf Christian Church sent a letter to the National Benevolent Association requesting their assistance in completing the application for the HUD 202 application. The application was submitted three times before it was finally approved in July 2000. The Senior Housing grant would then be used to build a 41-unit apartment complex located on William Street across from the church. In February 2001, a Board of Directors was formed and began meeting to oversee the local planning of the Senior Housing Complex.
